Gold detecting can be one of the most rewarding and relaxing experinces you will ever have in your life. Beware though once you find that first gold nugget you may become addicted and gold detecting will be in your blood for life.

The first decision you need to make is which gold detector to purchase. They range in price from under one hundred dollars to over five thousand dollars for a top the the range machine. Make sure before you purchase a gold detector do plenty of research to find a gold detector that is going to be suitable for you. If you are just starting out gold detecting it is better to purchase a basic machine with not to many settings.

The gold detector is basically made up of three components. The first and most important is the control box. The control box is what gives you the signal when you go over a target. The second is the component of the gold detector is the coil. If you are looking for small nuggets close to the surface you will use a small coil. If you are looking for larger nuggets deep down you will use a large coil. There are two types of coil on the market you can purchase. They are a monoloop coil and a double d coil. The third compnent of a metal detector is the power supply or battery box. This may not seem important but if your control box isn’t getting full power from the batteries it won’t work to it’s maximum potential.

Once you have purchased your machine don’t just jump in the car on and go off gold detecting staight away. Spend some time learning about your new gold detector and all it’s functions. Having your machine on the correct settings for the type of ground you are detecting will make the difference between finding gold and not finding gold.

Gold Detecting Books and Equipment

To be successful in gold detecting, everyone should invest in two types of assets: Mental and practical.

Mental assets: The foundation of success is knowledge, and if you want to be skillful in gold detecting, you have to know as much about it as possible. While the internet can be a useful source of information, it doesn’t always have the type of in-depth information you can get from gold detecting books written by real experts. The best gold detecting books can teach you the history and science behind gold detecting. This way, you’ll know about the long tradition behind what you’re doing, and you’ll be able to pinpoint the best places to search. Books also provide the type of step-by-step, in-depth advice that will give you confidence in the field and the skills to outmatch your competition.

Practical assets: You’ll also need to invest in the best, most up-to-date gold detecting equipment you can afford. Prices for metal detectors can range between a couple hundred dollars for the most basic models to over $1,000 for high-tech detectors. But sometimes, the most expensive gold detecting equipment may not be right for you. If you already know the best places to find gold, then fancy equipment may be burdensome overkill, especially if you’re on a budget. Other essential items are picks, scoops, digging tools, gold pans, GPS navigation devices, maps, and headphones. Don’t get caught up in the excitement of gold detecting and neglect any of these things. If you want to have success, make a checklist of items you need, and invest in the best you can afford in each category.

If you live in Australia and want to learn about gold detecting, go down to Bendigo and spend some time with Greckie at Golden Triangle Tours. He is the ultimate professional when it comes to the art of gold detecting and has over 25 years experience. If you do an overnight tour with Greckie you get to stay on his property where old gold workings are just metres away from where you sleep. You can take your own Gold Detector or you can use the latest gold detector on the market, the Minelab gpx4500.

Golden Triangle Tours will only take you on to private leases. The leases they have are scattered all around the golden triangle of Victoria. I have been down there 3 times so far this year and have found gold on every tour.

I cannot recommend Golden Triangle Tours highly enough and whether you are inexperienced or experienced at gold detecting, Golden Triangle Tours will advance your skills at gold detecting to a higher level.

Gold Panning can be a great recreational activity for the whole family to enjoy.  Unlike gold detecting which takes much concentration, panning can be much more relaxing and less intensive. Gold Panning especially will be less expensive than gold detecting.

Gold Panning

The essential tools you need to start gold detecting are a shovel or spade, a bottle to put your gold in and of course a pan used to find the gold. Gold panning isn’t hard to do to and there are plenty of books that will teach you the best techniques for panning gold. Before you head off gold panning make sure you find out about the local laws on where you can and can’t gold pan. Some states require you to have a licence to look for gold which will only cost you a small fee.
